St. Louis City and St. Louis County: navigating "The Great Divorce"

St. Louis city and county split in 1876 in what has come to be called “The Great Divorce.”

There have been several efforts to reunite the two, but voters, whether in the city or the county, have rejected them time and again.

In the last year there’s been renewed talk of St. Louis re-entering the county, but leaders in the city and county say they’re exploring a slower approach.

Zimmerman sworn in as St. Louis County Assessor

Jake Zimmerman was sworn into office today as St. Louis County's Assessor.

For the first time in more than 50 years, St. Louis County has an elected assessor - not one appointed by the county executive.

Jake Zimmerman was sworn into office today following his election on April 5. Zimmerman says his priority is to build an accountable office that listens to the county's taxpayers.

Court rejects fire district request to share taxes

A judge has rejected the Lemay Fire Protection District's efforts to get money for the emergency services it provides to the River City Casino, pictured here.

The Missouri Court of Appeals has ruled that St. Louis County is not required to share revenue from a new casino with the Lemay Fire Protection District.

Area law enforcement to crack down on heroin use through three-pronged approach

The use of heroin in the St. Louis area is at epidemic levels, according to law enforcement officials.

The number of heroin overdoses and deaths has doubled in the St. Louis County and city over the past four years. St. Louis County Chief of Police Tim Fitch said the drug is cheaper now and it can be snorted or smoked, instead of injected. He said it's no longer just an urban issue.
