Rick Majerus, Former SLU Coach, Dies

Rick Majerus, the jovial college basketball coach who led Utah to the 1998 NCAA final and had only one losing season in 25 years with four schools, died Saturday. He was 64.

Utah industrialist Jon Huntsman, the coach's longtime friend, confirmed in a statement released through The Salt Lake Tribune that Majerus died of heart failure in a Los Angeles hospital.

Majerus Will Not Return As SLU Basketball Coach

After taking health-related leave in August, Saint Louis University has announced that head men's basketball coach Rick Majerus will not be returning to the team.

An ongoing heart condition was stated as Majerus' reason for his initial leave, and is again the reason listed for his departure from SLU.

Majerus takes health-related leave as SLU head men's basketball coach

A spokesperson with Saint Louis University confirms that Rick Majerus will be taking a one-year leave of absence from his role as the University's head men's basketball coach. An ongoing heart condition is cited as the reason behind Majerus' leave.

"Rick is in a California hospital undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition," SLU's Director of Athletics Chris May said in a statement. "His health is the most important issue right now, and our hope is for full and complete recovery."
