Fatalities On Missouri Roads Up Over 2011 Totals

The number of people killed on Missouri roads is expected to be up slightly in 2012 compared with 2011.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says:

  • 806 motorists have died so far this year, compared with 786 last year - about a 2.5 percent increase.
  • That reverses five years of declines.
  • As recently as 2006, more than 1,000 people were killed along the state's roads and highways.

Rethinking St. Louis Highways

The creation of the new I-70 bridge over the Mississippi just north of downtown has created renewed interest in a plan to remove the part of I-70 that currently runs through downtown.

John Norquist is the President of the Congress for New Urbanism, where he champions a growing movement encouraging cities to tear down their freeways. 

Norquist gave a talk at Washington University entitled “Rethinking Our Streets: The Value of Flexible Street Design”
