Mo. ballot measures seek to increase minimum wage

Missouri voters could be asked next year to raise the state's minimum wage to $8.25.

The secretary of state's office on Tuesday approved the summaries on two initiative petitions, meaning proponents can begin collecting signatures to get the measures on the 2012 ballot.

Missouri's minimum wage currently matches the federal requirement of $7.25 an hour.

Group seeks to raise Mo. minimum wage

Missouri voters could be asked to raise the state's minimum wage to $8.25 an hour.

A group that backed a successful wage increase in the 2006 elections is now pushing to get the minimum wage issue back on the ballot in Missouri's 2012 elections.

An open-records request from The Associated Press shows that the minimum wage initiative already has been submitted to the secretary of state's office, which must approve a ballot title before supporters can begin gathering signatures.

Community activists launch campaign to combat right-to-work, preserve state min. wage, in Mo.

Community activists and labor interests in Missouri are getting an early start on combating efforts next year to cap the state’s minimum wage and turn Missouri into a right-to-work state.

Lawmakers failed to freeze the state’s minimum wage during this year’s session, and the right-to-work issue only got a few hours of debate with no vote.

Legislators may get last word on voter initiatives

Missouri is one of 24 states where citizens who gather enough signatures can put a question on the ballot.

They’re called voter initiatives.

While voters have the ability to enact laws in Missouri, those laws can be changed or even overturned by legislators.

This year, two voter-approved laws, one on puppy mills, the other on the minimum wage, have been targeted at the state capitol.

St. Louis Public Radio’s Maria Altman reports.
