Wording approved for Mo. ballot measure limiting payday loans

A group of community and religious leaders is proposing a Missouri ballot measure that would effectively limit the cost of payday loans. The secretary of state's office on Tuesday approved the wording of a proposed ballot summary, allowing supporters to begin a petition drive to put the question on a statewide ballot.

The Missouri State Treasurer is making low-interest loans available to over 40 counties trying to rebound from a string of weather-related disasters.

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel, who was in the St. Louis region Tuesday, says the loans will help homeowners and businesses qualify for loans in less than 24 hours.

Zweifel also says the new program will cut red tape and help qualified borrowers receive low-interest assistance loans in less than 24 hours.

Former Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has forgiven a loan he made to the man who wants the job he once held.
