Unusual demonstration project looks to promote the growth of urban trees

Workers install "silva cells" at Brightside St. Louis' Demonstration Garden and Learning Center.

Engineers, arborists, and landscape architects from across Missouri and southern Illinois gathered in St. Louis on Thursday for an unusual demonstration project.

Brightside St. Louis is installing “silva cells” outside its Demonstration Garden and Learning Center at the corner of Kingshighway and Vandeventer.

The goal is to promote the growth of urban trees.

Redbirds go green: new report highlights environmental initiatives at Busch Stadium

This year a 106-panel solar array was installed at Busch Stadium, above a ticket building and concession area.

The St. Louis Cardinals are highlighted in a new report that features environmental initiatives by the professional sports industry.

The report released today by the Natural Resources Defense Council describes efforts by sports leagues, teams, and venues to save energy and water, and reduce waste.

Power plants top the list of greenhouse gas emitters in St. Louis region, nationwide

A map showing the numbers and locations of Missouri greenhouse gas emitters included in the new EPA data set. You can interact with the map and find more specific data by location and facility via the link in the story below.

Power plants are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the U.S., followed by petroleum refineries.

That's according to data released today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The data set shows 2010 emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases from more than 6,700 of the largest sources in the U.S., including large industrial facilities and suppliers of certain fossil fuels and industrial gases.
