Ill. casino opens after battling for gambling license

Illinois' 10th casino is open after years of legal and regulatory fights over its gambling license.

The Rivers Casino officially opened Monday in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines. The license had long been dormant since originally being approved for the city of Rosemont in 1999.

Gov. Pat Quinn says he approves of the way the state's gaming board chose the Des Plaines location.

Court rules Ill. public works plan is legal

The Illinois Supreme Court has upheld a law that created a $31 billion statewide construction program.

It unanimously rejected arguments that lawmakers improperly mixed together different issues in a single piece of legislation.

The court on Monday said all parts of the law had "a natural and logical connection" to the public works program.

Measure to allow slot machines at Ill. racetracks awaits governor's signature

Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and horse tracks used to be the only options for legal gambling.

Then came riverboat casinos.

For years race track owners  in Illinois have asked lawmakers to allow slot machines at their tracks, creating so-called "racinos."

Now all it will take is a signature from Governor Pat Quinn.

But as St. Louis Public Radio’s Maria Altman reports, it’s not a sure thing.
