St. Louis Cardinals David Freese celebrates with his teammates at home place after hitting a solo walk off homerun to win game 6 of the World Series in the 11th inning on Oct. 27, 2011. The Cardinals went on to win the series.

Carlos Beltran and David Freese each hit two-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 Sunday night in Game 1 of the NL championship series.

The wild-card Cardinals took an early 6-0 lead and made it stand up. Two days earlier, St. Louis overcame a 6-0 deficit to beat Washington in the deciding Game 5 of the division series.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is tonight. Chris Carpenter pitches for the Cardinals against Ryan Vogelsong.

Updated 3:38 p.m:

It looks like David Freese is a winner in the Final Vote campaign and will be going to the All-Star Game.

MLB tweeted this afternoon that Freese was the National League winner, with Yu Darvish winning the American League contest.

Here's what Freese told MLB.com:

"It's St. Louis," Freese said of the huge support he received from Redbird Nation. "They love Cardinal baseball."

Freese had said that being reunited with La Russa was the biggest part of the honor, should fans give it to him. And they did.

"For me, it's not about going to the All-Star Game," Freese explained. "It's about playing for Tony La Russa one more time."

MLB.com also said that the whole Twitter-based effort for all of the players involved "drew a four-hour sustained average of 3,000 tweets per minute during the voting period."
