Slain St. Louis Police Officer Receives Medal of Valor

For the first time ever, Missouri’s Medal of Valor has been awarded posthumously.

During a ceremony today at the State Capitol, Missouri's highest public safety honor was given to the late Daryl Hall of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.  He was fatally shot on April 24th, 2011, while off-duty as he responded to gunfire outside a downtown nightclub.  Hall returned fire and also fatally shot the gunman.  Joseph Love, Hall’s uncle, says he’s not surprised that his nephew put himself in harm’s way to protect others.

Strips of gaffer's tape give tornado-damaged Joplin High School a new name. The Missouri Department of Transportation is considering letting the Joplin School District use a soon-to-be closed building for classes until storm damage is repaired.

MoDOT building that will be shuttered in restructuring could get new life

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission yesterday approved a five-year reduction plan that will eliminate 1200 jobs and close 131 facilities - including district offices in Macon, Joplin and Willow Springs. But the building in Joplin could get see new life fairly quickly. The AP reports that MoDOT director Kevin Keith has offered the building to the Joplin School District, which saw a half-dozen buildings destroyed or damaged in the May 22 F5 tornado.

Keith says agency employees who would be in the building when school starts would be relocated to temporary quarters.

Final respects paid to slain St. Louis police officer

Officer Daryl Hall.

Together with mourners, members of the St. Louis Police Department paid final respects to Officer Daryl Hall this morning at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Hall was shot and killed while trying to break up an off-duty incident last weekend.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said the tragedy underscores the sacrifice officers are asked to make, even while off duty.
