Trio Of Restaurants Impacting Urban Renewal In Botanical Heights

A successful urban neighborhood is made up of several components, some of which are schools, restaurants and residential housing.

During the 1970s, when business owner Joe Edwards opened Blueberry Hill in The Loop, University City experienced a certain measure of renewal.  The well-known restaurant remains an anchor for that stretch of Delmar Boulevard.

Current examples of urban renewal through new restaurants include Cherokee Street and the Carondelet neighborhood in South City.

Gitana’s ‘Faces Of Love’ Features Al-Andalus

For 15 years, Gitana Productions has presented an annual “Faces of Love” concert in an effort to bring people together through the power of music, dance or theater.  This year’s concert features Al-Andalus, an ensemble that performs music that originated in the Southern part of Spain at a time when Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together peacefully, creating beautiful music together.

Kurt Elling is a prominent American jazz vocalist.  Each of his ten albums have been nominated for a Grammy award and he has been named “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association eight times.

Being Gay And Muslim: Worldwide Film Festival Exploring African Issues Debuts In St. Louis

Image still from the documentary "I Am Gay and Muslim." It will screen Sunday at the Missouri History Museum as part of the Africa World Documentary Film Festival.

Six years ago, the annual Africa World Documentary Film Festival debuted in St. Louis.

The festival is back at the Missouri History Museum and runs through Sunday, March 3rd.  The three-day event features documentaries from filmmakers all over the world that are focused on social culture, sexual identity, mental disabilities, and more.

After showing in St. Louis, the films will travel to nine other venues across three continents.
