Illinois prison workers union: workers subject to coordinated shakedowns
A spokesman for the union representing Illinois prison workers now says staff at nearly all state facilities have been subject to coordinated shakedowns. A July 19 email obtained by the Associated Press seems to confirm those comments, saying a Department of Corrections administrator ordered wardens to at 10 prisons to conduct 'mass shakedowns' of staff as they left work last week.
Elected officials from Missouri and Illinois will gather tomorrow at the Eads Bridge to break ground on a $36 million rehabilitation project for the 138-year-old structure.
But the St. Louis Post-Dispatch finds that the federally-funded project is over budget and behind schedule.

The trustees of the University of Illinois system have approved a 4.8 percent tuition hike for incoming freshmen at the system's three campuses.
The vote today means incoming freshmen will pay $532 more a year at the main campus in Champaign-Urbana, $468 more in Chicago, and $420 more in Springfield.
