As a highly skilled dressmaker, she was eventually able to earn the money to buy her freedom.

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini is the author of a new book about Elizabeth Keckley.  She writes about Keckley moving from St. Louis to Washington D.C. and becoming First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln’s personal dressmaker.

St. Louis Symphony Conductor Laureate Leonard Slatkin returned to St. Louis this week to conduct the orchestra he led for 17 years.  Slatkin was Robert Peterson's guest during the intermission of St. Louis Public Radio's live broadcast of the St. Louis Symphony concert on Saturday, January 19.  During the conversation, Slatkin commented on building audience for the St. Louis Symphony to make it as well known as the St.

St. Louis Symphony Bass Trombonist Gerry Pagano recognized the need for a forum to provide educational and performance opportunities for trombone, euphonium, baritone horn and tuba players in the St. Louis region, so he formed the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective.  The organization presents its 5th Annual Low Brass Spectacular Gala Concert Tuesday, January 22 at The Sheldon Concert Hall. When a family has 10 children who all study music, it’s natural that some of them might form an ensemble.  In the case of the Dickson family, 4 of them not only formed a string quartet, but all entered college at the same time, halfway across the country.  

In 2012, approximately 100 local professional theatrical productions were presented in the St. Louis area.

A new organization called the St. Louis Theater Circle, a group of area theater reviewers, seeks to recognize local professional theater with the inaugural Louie Awards.

The first Louie Awards presentation coincides with the suspension of the Kevin Kline Awards.  Earlier this year the Professional Theater Council of St. Louis decided not to hold a ceremony honoring 2012 theatrical productions, citing financial issues.
