Nixon to set aside $25M for Joplin tornado, will speak with Obama at memorial

Mo. Gov. Jay Nixon at a press conference on May 27 when he announced that $25 million will be set aside in next year's state budget to help pay for damage following the tornado in Joplin on May 22.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon will shift $25 million from next year’s state budget to help pay for damage in Joplin caused by last weekend’s deadly tornado.

Nixon says he doesn’t yet know which areas of the FY 2012 budget he’ll use to help offset tornado expenses.

“What decisions we have to make because of that to trim the budget and to balance, we’ll make over the coming weeks…if the demands for dollars continue to move up, we clearly have other sources, other ways to get resources,” Nixon said.

Veterans give Cochran VA hospital good marks

A new survey released today finds that most area veterans are happy with the care and service they get from local VA medical facilities.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) initiated the survey following problems at the John Cochran VA center last summer. At a press conference at the Soldiers' Memorial Military Museum in downtown St. Louis, McCaskill said most of the 185 veterans surveyed had positive things to say about the local VA hospitals but there’s room for improvement.

Police: 4 shot to death in St. Louis County home

Four people have been shot to death in what police are calling an apparent domestic incident in the St. Louis suburb of Affton.

The shootings happened Friday morning.

Mo. and Ill. plan to step up enforcement over holiday weekend

The Missouri Highway Patrol and Illinois police will increase enforcement along highways and interstates over the Memorial Day weekend.

Police and transportation officials in Mo. and Ill. plan to boost enforcement over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Missouri Highway Patrol will again participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort.) Troopers will be on alert for all traffic offenses, especially aggressive and impaired drivers.

132 now dead, 156 unaccounted for in Joplin, 4,000 jobs affected by tornado

The state of Missouri says the number of people missing or unaccounted for since the Joplin tornado is now at 156.

Missouri Department of Public Safety deputy director Andrea Spillars said Friday that officials are working 24 hours a day to trim the list that stood at 232 a day earlier.
